28,000 Signatures for horses
- the young generation of animal lovers extremely active

In co-operation with Animal Network the magazine "Wendy" started a postcard action in September of last year against the transportation of animals for slaughter all the way across Europe, the response was magnificent; more than 28,000 signatures. Many of these young animal lovers were not satisfied with merely signing their own protest cards, instead they collected additional signatures in the form of self-made lists. Not only compassion could be felt in this response, one clearly recognises that, when confronted with a complicated problem and asked to face up to facts, today's youth are quite prepared to shoulder their share of the responsibilities involved. Protest action cards reached the Animal Network offices from Germany, Sweden, Austria, Switzerland, France, Italy, Great Britain; Monaco, Cyprus, Belgium, Liechtenstein, Greece, Luxembourg, Hungary, the Netherlands, Spain, USA and even from far away Nicaragua.

An interim report published by Wendy in its February 1999 edition reported the receipt of a further 8,000 signatures.

Animal Network will hand these signatures over to the German Minister for Ernährung, Landwirtschaft and Forsten (Food, Agriculture and Forests) Mr. Karl-Heinz Funke in Bonn. The handover will be co-ordinated with a resolution for effective animal protection during transportation of horses for slaughter. The minister who, until 30 June of this year was President of the EU Council of Ministers of Agriculture and, therefore, politically responsible not only for national animal protection legislation in Germany but for the whole of the EU. He will be obliged to provide concrete information with regards to his intentions in view of the, frequently indescribable horrors, of animal transportation for slaughter.

We will continue to report under the heading "Help Suffering Horses".

We thank the "Wendy" readers most sincerely for their fantastic commitment and engagement.
